Abstract

The development of satellite communication technology mostly uses c-band frequencies which causes these frequencies allocation to be increasingly limited. While there are not many satellite communication systems that use ku-band frequency. Different frequencies types usage certainly produce different performance impacted by VSAT diameter size and rain attenuation. The goals of this research is to determine impact between antenna diameter and VSAT receiver quality and be able to calculate rain attenuation effect on VSAT communication with ku-band and c-band frequencies. In this research, the authors analyzed link budget parameters obtained by manual calculation methods, matlab software and rain-attenation prediction methods from ITU-R P.618-5 models with link parameter data obtained from PT. Telkomsat. Based on research, VSAT performance using 1 meter, 3.8 meter, and 4.5 meter antenna diameter produce 10.67 dB, 15.91 dB, and 16.17 dB Eb/No value for ku-band frequency at each antenna and 12.61 dB, 17.27 dB, and 17.45 dB for c-band frequency at each antena is most effective with an Eb/No value is 10.67 dB for ku-band frequency used and an Eb/No value is 12.61 dB for c-band frequency. And it can be seen that after rain attenuation calculation with ranging from 0 mm/h to 145 mm/h rainfall levels, it is known that using ku-band frequency has a weakness against rain attenuation with an 35.37dB attenuation value at 145 mm/h rainfall, while using c-band frequency is not too affected by rain attenuation with an 2.25 dB attenuation value at same rainfall.
