Abstract

NG-PON2 is the latest Passive Optical Network (PON) technology that is capable of covering long distances of up to 60 km, with long distances there will be a lot of data lost due to signal attenuation during the data transmission process. To overcome this problem, an Optical Amplifier is needed. So for this research, we will do analysis and simulation using a hybrid optical amplifier combined between EDFA and ROA. By changing the position of the Optical Amplifier, varying the number of Optical Network Units (ONU) and varying the distance whether it will affect the results of BER, Q-factor, power received. Based on the simulation results that have been carried out, the best value for downstream transmission is using an in line amplifier scheme with a received power value of -25.38 dBm, Q Factor = 8.88, and BER = 1.72 x 10-18 for a distance of 40 km and 64 ONU. The booster amplifier gets the best value on downsream with the received power value of -27.23 dBm, Q factor = 7.75, and BER = 2.98 x 10-14 for a distance of 40 km and 64 ONU. As for the upstream transmission, it uses a pre amplifier scheme with a received power value of -15.18 dBm, Q Factor = 9.7, and BER = 5.22 x 10-21 for a distance of 40 km and 64 ONU. Based on this value, the in-line amplifier gets better results for downstream because of its placement close to the receiver. Meanwhile, the best upstream scheme uses a pre-amplifier because only the pre-amplifier provides amplification on the upstream side. Keywords : NG-PON2, TWDM-PON, Hybrid Optical amplifier
