Abstract
The development of telecommunications technology in the world proceeds rapidly, especially in satellite communications. Communication in satellite technology uses transponders that functions to receive signals emitted from Earth stations and then sending the signals back to Earth. Telkom Indonesia has geostationary satellites that can reach all parts of Indonesia, which have C-Band transponders and KU-Band transponders. Transponder is part of a single unit in a satellite that has limited capacity, so it is necessary to calculating in terms of bandwidth and power so that communication can run effectively and optimally. Referring to these problems, link budget calculations to determine traffic condition and transponder capacity in terms of bandwidth and power. Optimalitation power, it is necessary to know the bit error rate (BER) parameters, while in terms of bandwidth, the selection of modulation techniques such as QPSK, 8-PSK, and 16-QAM as well as the determination of forward error correction (FEC) needs to be done to get the best results. The selection of the type of transponder is also carried out in order to obtain effective traffic condition and optimalitation transponder capacity. Traffic condition itself is seen from the BER value to determine optimal conditions. In this case, on the satellite communication link from the Yogyakarta Earth station to the Mimika Earth station, the result is that when viewed from the traffic condition and the optimal transponder used is a C-Band transponder with 8-PSK modulation technique using FEC 7/8 with a BER value of 1.69802 × 10-9, because the value already meets the standards set by ITU-R S.2099-0. If it is based on the use of optimal traffic condition, namely the 8-PSK FEC 7/8 modulation on the C-Band transponder, the results of the transponder capacity are obtained under limited bandwidth conditions where the percentage of bandwidth and percentage of power values are 0.68% and 0.31%, meaning that there is an increase in bandwidth and a reduction in power. Keywords: Transponder, bandwidth, power, modulation, link budget
