Abstract

Fiber optic technology has brought a new revolution in telecommunications technology because it can reduce costs so that the required costs are relatively low with high service quality. However, with all the advantages of optical fiber does not mean that it does not have problems. One of the problems that often occurs is the loss of light energy in the optical fiber core caused by several things such as poor splicing, cable breaks, community activities that result in attenuation and loss (loss transmission) in the data transmission process. Fiber optic splicing uses the fusion splicing method. The tool used is a fusion splicer that serves to connect the ends of each optical fiber that is permanently connected. In the Surakarta to Bannaran area, the installed optical fiber is 3,870 km long and has a capacity of 2 cores. Then measurements were made using an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) in Surakarta to Bannaran and it was recorded that the fiber optic cable broke with an average measured distance of 3,473 km. The damage that occurs is caused by the declining quality of the cable so repairs are needed. Furthermore, optical fiber splicing is carried out with a maximum attenuation value of 0.03 dB for each core. Keywords: Fiber optic, Fusion splicing, OTDR, Loss transmission
