Abstract

Communicating is a human need as a social creature to interact with peoples. There are various ways for humans to communicate one of them with written either oral or sign language. In social life some people have special needs in communication such as the speech impaired or deaf who have limitations and difficulties in communicating in their daily lives due to their physical deficiencies. And most normal people generally do not learn this ASL Language so it is difficult to grasp the intentions of those with special needs. This limitation is able to be facilitated by sensor technology to translate body positions or body parts easily. The research began with a literature study surveying the need for sensors to be embedded in gloves. This research utilizes flex sensors to distinguish ASL cues. The hardware design based on the ATmega328 Microcontroller as the central controller is used to read the existing sensor output and process it with the help of an internet connection using the ESP8266 WiFi module, the translated data can be displayed on a smart phone in the form of text and voice. The result of this research is a glove system that is able to translate ASL, and has an accuracy rate of 90% and a good QOS according to the TIPHON standard. Keywords : American sign language, Arduino, sensor flex, ESP8266, QoS
