Abstract

MUF depression is one of the disturbance in HF radio communication cause of the foF2 depression to the median value. This study uses data that has been through scaling and tabulation data process from the ionogram. The foF2 changes over time by the photoionization activity in the ionospheric layer. This implies that the frequencies higher than foF2 cannot be propagated if foF2 has decreased from the prediction, so that radio communication did not run optimally. The increasing or decreasing of fof2 value is closely related to a geomagnetic storm phenomena. Frequency needs to be adjusted taking into the geomagnetic storm to avoid propagation failure due to the MUF Depression. After being observed, no daily, monthly, or yearly occurrence patterns were found based on the graph of MUF depression. The geomagnetic storm that affects the MUF depression is caused by the decreation of [O]/[N2] ratio in ionosphere, so the electron recombination rate increased and the electron density of the F2 layer decreased. In the case of MUF depression > 30% radio propagation was failed, therefore MUF depression prediction was needed to minimize the possibility of propagation failure. Keywords : HF, MUF Depression, Ionosphere, foF2
