Abstract

The National Standardization Agency has set the parameters for the quality of fresh milk in Indonesia. One of them is the somatic cell content with a maximum value of 4x105 cells / ml. Commonly, the number of somatic cells in each milk sample could be figured out by counting manually through the microscopic images or using Fossomatic tool. However, Fossomatic tool is relatively expensive. In this study, an image processing approach was carried out to detect and count the number of somatic cells present in cow's milk. The techniques used are morphological operations: erosion, dilation, color space conversion, and labeling. In general, the value of accuracy of the system in detecting the presence of somatic cells reaches 85%. From the results of the study, it is expected to develop a system capable of calculating somatic cells with the help of computers, instead of counting manually or using the Fossomatic tool.
