Abstract

DWDM systems have a problem known as dispersion. One solution to reduce dispersion is to use a type of optical fiber which is a single mode fiber (SMF) development, namely (NZDSF) Non Zero Dispersion Shifted Fiber. In order to reduce the dispersion, another technique can also be added, namely Dispersion Compensating Fiber (DCF). This study compares two types of optical fiber, namely NZDSF and SMF at a bitrate of 10 and 40 Gbps using 16 channels that have 200 GHz spacing between channels. Network modeling length is 300 km on SMF and NZDSF fiber types, and uses an Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier (EDFA). The research scenario is carried out by varying the power of the transmitter with a value of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 dBm at 200 GHz channel spacing using the Symmetrical Compensation scheme on the two optical fibers tested. The comparison results obtained using a 10 Gbps bitrate on the SMFDCF system obtained an average BER of 2,94 × 10-44 and an average Q factor of 14.46. Then with a bitrate of 40 Gbps it produces an average BER of 6,81 × 10-03 and an average Q Factor of 2,43. Whereas in the NZDSF-DCF system design, the average BER was 2,12 × 10-09 with an average Q factor of 8.95. Furthermore, using a 40 Gbps bitrate, an average BER of 3.17 × 10-01 and an average Q factor of 1,75 is obtained. From this research it can be concluded concluded that system design using SMF-DCF has a smaller BER value and a greater Q-factor than system design using NZDSFDCF. However, the design of the NZDSF-DCF system has a more significant change compared to the SMF-DCF. Keywords : DWDM, NZDSF, DCF, Q-factor, BER.
