Abstract

Deleting files conventionally does not completely remove data from storage media. The data can still be recovered using data recovery software that is even available for free on the Internet. Unfortunately, secure deletion mechanism is not implemented by default by the operating system because the process is slow. Many secure deletion algorithms at this time have not adapted to the characteristics of flash memory such as flash drives that have wear-leveling and the presence of logical and physical memory layers. The purpose of this research is to implement secure deletion mechanism in removing files from a USB Flash Drive while still paying attention to the characteristics of flash memory and to speed up the process of removing the files. The method used in this study is the combination of the modified HMG IS5 algorithm and USRM algorithm. Files deleted by HMG IS5 and USRM algorithms cannot be restored with any software and the file deletion process can be completed on average 60% faster than traditional HMG IS5 in similar software. Flash memory performance and byte size also affect secure deletion process execution time. Keywords: File, HMG IS5, Shredder, Secure Deletion, USRM, USB Flash Drive
