Abstract

English mastery for students is important since English is one of international languages used in international communication. Besides, textbooks used in higher education are mostly written in English. It means that the students should be able to use English for both international communication and reading comprehension. This article reports my study on improving English for Non-English Department students at IAIN Purwokerto, held in Academic Year 2010/2011 and 2011/2012. The total participants were 28 students, consisting of 14 male students in Academic Year 2010/2011, and 14 female students in Academic Year 2011/2012. During their living in the dormitory for a year, they had to use English as their daily language. To make sure that the participants used English, there was an English lecturer who lived in the dormitory. Those who did not use English got punishment by singing an English song, reading English literary work, etc. The skills studied by them were speaking, listening, reading, and writing as well as grammar. The tutorial was held twice a day, namely so-called morning class and evening class in five days. Outside the tutorial, they made a group of discussion, meeting, and other activities that were made as natural as possible. The findings revealed that they became highly motivated to study English and familiar with English communication. To accommodate their writing skill, they made a monthly published bulletin. Speech contest and English debate were held routinely among them and at times they joint with English event outside. Some participants, especially from Department of Islamic Education, succeeded in joining field study program where they had to teach in Thailand for some months.
