Abstract

This research is an effort to reveal the view of American women in the different era towards human being‟s life. The objective of the research is to compare how a Puritan American woman and a modern American woman recognize their lives. Using the literary sociology, the objective of the research is discussed in the two narratives as the main sources and the criticisms and the social condition in America in the Puritan era and in the modern era as the secondary sources. The result of the research shows female captivity in Rowlandson‟s work mostly refers to God‟s destiny and it is a kind of punishment given by God. Rowlandson thought that her captivity by the Indians, who different faith and culture, made her understand the power of God in protecting her from merciless heathen. On the other hand, female captivity in Gilman‟s work mostly refers to human being‟s effort to overcome his problem. „Her captivity‟ is based on his love. The narrator succeeds to overcome her own problem because she has a power to do it. It is nothing to do with God‟s destiny and she can change her own life by her own effort. Keywords: God reliance, self-reliance, captivity
