Abstract

Mastering English for non-English department students needs a lot of methods because of their lack of motivation to study English seriously. One of the methods that I used was Al Muraja’ah method which is commonly used in Islamic Boarding School to study and to master Al Qur’an. Most students were not familiar with this method so that they had to know it first before practicing it. The primary activities of improving English mastery were (1) building knowledge of the method (2) modeling of the English materials, (3) practicing to present the English materials in group and pairs, and (4) independent presentation. This study involved 36 students of semester 2, Telecommunication Engineering Study Program, Institut Teknologi Telkom Purwokerto. They consisted of 25 male and 11 female students. The English materials that they had to master were designed to cope with the syllabus of English 2 in Telecommunications Engineering Study Program. To know their success in mastering English materials, I set two indicators previously, namely process (students’ participation and involvement) and product (students’ mastery of English materials). The conclusion of the study indicates that the use of Al Muraja’ah method in improving English mastery can be used as one of the methods in teaching learning English.
