Abstract

ABSTRACT Television service upgraded to digital service when the analog service has a bad content. Digital television uses the MPEG compression techniques. MPEG-2 can present high quality video and supports transfer rates more than 8 Mbps. MPEG-2 is ideal for DVDs that have a data rate of 9.8 Mbps. On MPEG-4, transport and object oriented framework designed to support the application of conventional digital video or interactive that has a bitrate ranging from 5 Kbps to 4 Mbps. MPEG-4 intended for streaming, CD distribution, and broadcast television and videophone support digital rights management. MPEG-4 combines two sets of core algorithms, it is the VLBV in design for bitrate 64 Kbps up to 4.8 and HBV core designed for bitrate 64 Kbps to 4 Mbps. Bandwidth of MPEG-2 is lower than bandwidth of MPEG-4. It is marked by using the same data rate, in example the bandwidth that used by MPEG-4 is 3703.74 KHz of data rate 5000 Kbps for video and 94.852 KHz of data rate 128 Kbps for audio, while bandwidth that used by MPEG-2 is 2962.993 KHz of data rate 5000 Kbps for video and 75.881 KHz of data rate 128 Kbps for audio. This shows that the quality of the content would be better if use MPEG-4 compression techniques because the higher bandwidth will produce a good quality content. Keywords: Bandwidth, MPEG-2, MPEG-4
