Abstract

Mobile Ad-hoc Network (MANET) is a type of wireless ad-hoc network characterized by its independence from fixed, organized infrastructure such as routers, access points, etc. In MANET, nodes, which refer to interconnected devices, have the freedom to move. However, the high mobility of MANET necessitates robust routing protocols and propagation loss models to ensure effective data transmission. Therefore, this research focuses on the performance of one such MANET routing protocol, Optimized Link State Routing (OLSR), comparing two propagation loss models: Friis and Nakagami, across three scenarios involving increasing numbers of nodes, 10, 30, and 50 nodes. The performance metrics analyzed are throughput, packet delivery ratio (PDR), and routing overhead, using the network simulator software NS3 for simulation. Results show that under the 30 and 50 node scenarios, Friis outperforms Nakagami in terms of throughput (ranging from 2.19836Kbps to 2.51551Kbps) and PDR (ranging from 79% to 87%), whereas Nakagami achieves throughput between 1.84586Kbps and 2.14655Kbps and PDR between 67% and 76%. Interestingly, in the 10 node scenario, Nakagami takes the lead with a throughput of 1.59059Kbps and a PDR of 62%, compared to Friis throughput of 1.42422Kbps and PDR of 60%. As for routing overhead, Nakagami records higher figures at both 10 and 50 nodes (3113 and 75075), while Friis shows lower overheads (3098 and 74305). However, at 30 nodes, Friis slightly exceeds Nakagami with 26049 against 25748. In summary, Friis proves more efficient in scenarios with a higher number of nodes, while Nakagami shows superiority in smaller-scale networks.
