Abstract

The sharing economy has revolutionized certain industries by enabling individuals to provide services traditionally offered by large corporations. Despite its merits, the sharing economy has not been able to tackle societal problems such as racial discrimination. In this research-in-progress, we propose a nudge to attenuate racial stereotyping in short term rental platforms such as Airbnb. The nudge presents the design of a guest profile that is aimed at directing focus of hosts on guest’s attributes other than their ethnicity. Design of experiment evaluating the nudge is discussed next, followed by conclusion and discussion. The short paper ends with limitations and future work.
